The capital of Tuscany is one of the places to visit at least once in your life. Surrounded by hills and crossed by the Arno, Florence (Firenze in Italian) is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in the world, well deserving its place on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

#1. Discover the Florence Cathedral

If there is one site to visit in Florence during a road trip in Italy, it is definitely this one. So, do not hesitate to push the door of the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral. You will discover Brunelleschi's dome, which will undoubtedly leave you speechless.

Entry to the cathedral is free, but you can buy a ticket to climb the 463 steps leading to the top. From the top, you will have an exceptional view of Florence and you will be able to admire one of the most spectacular works of the Renaissance. Be sure to book in advance !

#2. Visit the Palazzo Vecchio

Head to the Piazza della Signoria located between Piazza del Duomo and the Arno River to discover the Palazzo Vecchio. Built in the 14th century, this iconic building of Florence now houses the city hall.

This palace-fortress with unique architecture can be visited like a museum. You will be able to discover richly decorated rooms, superb frescoes, and sumptuous ceilings. Be sure to buy your tickets before coming, especially if you are traveling in summer.

#3. Climb the Giotto's Campanile

If you have little time to dedicate to this visit, do not hesitate to identify in advance where the works you absolutely want to see are located. #5. Admire the view from Piazzale Michelangelo

To enjoy the most beautiful view of Florence, head to Piazzale Michelangelo in the Oltrarno district on the left bank of the Arno. From this lovely square, you will have a panoramic view of the whole city.

It is also the best place to watch the sunset. If you pay attention, you will notice that this panorama appears on most postcards of Florence !

#6. Explore the Pitti Palace

Your stroll through Florence's historic center will sooner or later lead you to the Pitti Palace. Overlooking the Boboli Gardens, this former residence of the Medici is today part of the local heritage with its art museums.

I particularly recommend the Palatine Gallery and its impressive trompe-l'œil. Paintings, frescoes, sculptures… Art enthusiasts won’t know where to start with works by Raphael, Titian, Rubens, and Caravaggio.

#7. Cross the Ponte Vecchio

It’s impossible to visit Florence without crossing the Ponte Vecchio! By the way, for the record, it is one of the oldest bridges in Europe. Considered an emblem of the city, this bridge is both a shopping gallery and a pedestrian street.

If you love luxury jewelry, you will be served, as jewelers are an integral part of the landscape. A tip: the bridge is taken by storm by tourists during the day. Come early in the morning or in the evening to enjoy the particularly special atmosphere of the place. Crossing the Ponte Vecchio is like stepping back in time and experiencing Medici Florentine life.

#8. Visit the San Giovanni Baptistery

Located in front of the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral, the San Giovanni Baptistery has earned its place among the top 10 things to do in Florence. Considered the oldest building in Piazza del Duomo, it stands out with its facade covered in green and white marble.

Take a break away from the urban hustle and bustle at the Boboli Gardens. Located just behind the Pitti Palace, this superb park is one of Florence's wonders. Often compared to the gardens of the Palace of Versailles, these classical gardens created in the 16th and 17th centuries are so beautiful that you will struggle to leave.

During your walk, you will pass by Renaissance statues, richly decorated fountains, and an old theater. With its roses and dahlias, the garden is at its most beautiful in spring.

#10. Be amazed at the San Lorenzo Market

Don’t leave Florence without visiting the Mercato Centrale. Under this 19th-century hall is the superb San Lorenzo market. Come here to sample local products and find some gourmet souvenirs to bring back to your loved ones.

The stalls offer olive oil, fresh pasta, cheese, truffles… You won’t know where to start! For a quick but delicious lunch, spend a few euros on a panino di lampredotto. This sandwich is a local specialty made with spicy beef.
