How to pack your suitcase for a trip to Portugal?

Ready to fly to Portugal? Whether you've chosen to explore the cobbled streets of Lisbon, the sunny beaches of the Algarve or the picturesque vineyards of the Douro Valley, a careful preparation of your luggage is essential for a stress-free road trip.

So grab your passport and open your dressing room: I'll help you pack for your trip to Portugal!

#1. Pack seasonal clothes for Portugal

Packing your suitcase, an essential step for your trip to Portugal

If you're traveling to Portugal in midsummer, your luggage should be fairly light: shorts, T-shirts and dresses, preferably in cotton to regulate body heat. Don't forget a few extra layers for the cooler evenings, or if you're traveling at altitude. Remember to cover your shoulders and knees when visiting religious sites such as the Fatima sanctuary or the Hieronymites monastery in Lisbon.

Spring and autumn are mild, but can be rainy, so pack a raincoat and a slightly warmer jacket, such as a fleece.

A suitcase for a trip to Portugal in winter will involve a few extra layers and waterproofing, along with a scarf or neck warmer and a hat for the often strong wind on the coast. However, the season is quite mild and should offer you some nice sunny spells that will make you forget the occasional chill!

#2. Choose comfort for your shoes

Are you ready to explore the narrow streets of Porto?

Pack a pair of light, airy sneakers, practical for strolling the streets of Lisbon or Porto, where your daily step counter can quickly reach new heights.

For the evening or the beach, don't forget to pack flip-flops, espadrilles or sandals: your feet will thank you!

#3. Select the right equipment

Get ready for the Portuguese sun!

Before you leave, check whether you need an electrical adapter for Portuguese sockets (they are type F, 230V).

Don't forget to pack a mosquito repellent, and a few citronella sticks if you're traveling in a camper van. These little heat-and-humidity-loving insects have a way of tarnishing a beautiful holiday (although the Azores are generally spared).

UV protection is essential, especially if you're traveling in fine weather: protect your head with a proper headgear, and your eyes with a good pair of sunglasses.

#4. Don't forget the little ones

If you plan on enjoying the beautiful beaches of Portugal with your family, be sure to pack for both children and adults: a swimsuit, a towel, a wide-brimmed hat, and a good amount of sunscreen.

The contrast is often surprising between the scorching rays of the sun and the cool waters of the ocean; a long-sleeved UV shirt will be a good compromise for the most sensitive.

Regarding transport, for the little ones, keep in mind that strollers will have their limits in the cobbled alleys of Obidos or on the coastal paths of Lagos! A soft baby carrier slipped into your suitcase will offer you a logistical alternative.

#5. Be well-prepared for hiking!

Hiking along a levada in Madeira
The levadas of Madeira offer beautiful tropical hikes!

Your backpack should carry a full water bottle or flask, some cereal bars, or fresh fruit in case of hunger.

Your hiking shoes should be ready for significant changes in elevation on varied terrains: packed earth, gravel, uneven rocks, and sometimes slippery moss.

Don't forget a small bag for your waste, to take with you, thus leaving nature as untouched as when you encountered it.

And if it is in Madeira or the Azores that you are setting your hiking boots, keep in mind that these destinations have an almost tropical climate, sometimes resembling a jungle. Take into account the humidity of these islands when choosing your technical clothing.

Things to remember for any trip

  • Identification and official documents (passport or national ID card, driving license)
  • Travel documents (airplane tickets, hotel reservations, vouchers for car rental)
  • Toiletries and essential medications (with a prescription in English if needed)
  • Cleansing wipes and hand sanitizer
  • Camera (with memory card) or smartphone, with a spare battery

One last tip before you go: don't leave empty-handed, make sure to save some space in your suitcase to bring back some unique souvenirs from your trip to Portugal !
