Portugal has the particularity of enjoying a Mediterranean climate, while benefiting from the moods of the Atlantic Ocean, which makes it a pleasant destination all year round.
Here's an overview of Portugal's two main tourist seasons: high season (May-June-July-August) and low season (April-September-October-November).
WHEN TO TRAVEL IN HIGH SEASON?
May - June
This is one of the two most pleasant periods of the year, as temperatures are mild and you avoid the tourist rush. It's also spring, the trees are blooming and the days are getting longer. A word of warning to swimmers, however: the water is cool almost all year round on the Portuguese coast, and spring temperatures don't yet allow you to get into the water so easily.
July - August
It's summer, temperatures can rise up to 30 degrees Celsius and the beaches and city centers are packed with people. You'll need to plan ahead to book the best sopts!
The warm atmosphere, the beauty of the land and the attractive rates for services in Portugal are attracting always more people.
WHEN TO TRAVEL IN LOW SEASON
April
Like May and June, April is a good month to visit Portugal outside the busy tourist season. The weather is already relatively good (temperatures between 12 and 17 degrees), and fares are particularly attractive.
September
It's the start of autumn, with temperatures beginning to drop and the heat finally dissipating. It's also harvest season, with numerous wine tastings in the country's villages. What's more, the water has warmed up over the summer, and it's the perfect time for swimming and enjoying the beautiful sunsets on the beaches. It's our second favorite time to visit Portugal!
October-November
At this time of year, it's simple: the closer you get to winter, the lower the temperatures, without ever becoming cold or negative! That's the great thing about Portugal: it stays warm for a long time. So if you're not particularly fond of hot weather and like to avoid crowds, you might well consider visiting Portugal at the end of the year.
