Haugesund

What to do

  • Noteworthy
  • Worth the detour
  • Must see

Welcome to Haugesund, a delightful port city on Norway's east coast! Ideally located between Stavanger and Bergen, it is a convenient and accessible destination that offers a charming coastal feel.

While the surroundings are mentioned in historical texts such as the Saga of the Kings of Norway and the Viking epics, the city's development was rather late. Two hundred years ago, only a handful of families inhabited the coastline where Haugesund now stands. It was not until the late 19th century that the port experienced growth thanks to herring fishing, and the pretty traditional facades colored its quays.

DOWNTOWN HAUGESUND is perfect for leisurely strolls, coffee breaks, and fine dining in the city's many restaurants.

  • The Herring Museum (Sildemuseet): A true cornucopia during Haugesund's port boom, herring is undoubtedly one of the city's emblems. A museum, mainly open in summer, is dedicated to local life in the 19th century, featuring typical wooden buildings, traditional costumes, and historic boats.
  • Viking Planet Haugesund: An immersive experience not to be missed! Both educational and extremely entertaining, this modern museum invites young and old to relive the great Viking era.
  • Haraldshaugen Monument: This monument north of Haugesund commemorates the unification of Norway by King Harald. An obelisk stands at its center in a slightly austere setting, but it has the advantage of being located on the coast, making it a lovely walk on a highly symbolic site.
  • Steinsfjellet: Less than 5km from downtown Haugesund, this very accessible hike offers a beautiful panorama of the coast and its countless islands.
  • Djupadalen: Not far from Steinsfjellet and particularly pleasant in autumn, this area offers beautiful hikes for families, between lake and forest.

The HAUGESUND SURROUNDINGS are full of hiking possibilities and great escape ideas.

  • The islands of Utsira and Røvær: If the weather permits and you stay more than one night in Haugesund, a boat trip to one of these islands will allow you to experience an authentic island lifestyle while admiring the coast during a pleasant cruise.
  • Bukkøy Island: The site is famous for hosting an annual Viking gathering that perpetuates the ancestral traditions of Avaldsnes. A Viking farm can also be visited outside the festival during nice weather, but we advise you to check the opening hours before visiting.
  • Himakåna Panorama: This promontory offers an incredible panoramic view of Nedstrandsfjord and Lake Lysevatnet. Often named "mini-Trolltunga," it is accessible after about an hour's ascent, easier than its larger counterpart.
  • Skudeneshavn Port: If you have the time, take a short escape to this charming seaside village. Here, you're not looking for the spectacular, but rather a serene atmosphere typical of the Norwegian coast.

Finally, don't forget to enjoy the seafood and local products, as Haugesund offers a variety of specialties based on herring (a must in the region!), clams (our favorite), as well as sweet and delicious desserts. Enjoy your stay in Haugesund!
