What type of driver's license do I need to rent a car in Iceland?

Many people are wondering if they need a special license to rent a car in Iceland.

We won't let the mystery be any longer: the answer is no.

In fact, all you need for a care hire in Iceland is a valid driver's license from your home country.

Here are the two requirements for your license to be accepted here:

1 - Your license must use the Latin alphabet.

2 - Primary and additional drivers must have been licensed for more than 12 months.

If your driver's license is European, it is fit to rent a car in Iceland. In addition, it is very important to find out about the Highway Code of the country of your destination.

In Iceland, the majority of rental vehicles are equipped with a manual transmission. If you would like a car with an automatic transmission, please don't hesitate to ask!

If you do not have a European, European Economic Area (Liechtenstein and Norway), Canadian or American driver's license, the international license is mandatory.  Please note that the international license does not replace your original driver's license, it only accompanies it. You must have both documents with you at all times to be able to pick up your car hire.

Important notes

The customer must present a credit card in the name of the main driver. When picking up the car, it is therefore mandatory to present a driver's license and a credit card in the same name.

Generally, the rental agencies will put a hold on your credit card for the amount of the deductible to be paid in case of an accident.
