Days 1-2 : Palermo

Your road trip in Italy begins in the capital of Sicily. This first stop will certainly delight lovers of old stones, history, and architecture. Among the must-sees in Palermo are:

  • The Norman Palace and the Palatine Chapel
  • The Teatro Massimo
  • The church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti
  • The Foro Italico


Don't miss the Capo and Vucciria markets to enjoy the atmosphere and buy products to take home or taste on the spot.

Whether you’re looking to hike or enjoy a superb panorama over Palermo, climb up to the Santuario di Santa Rosalia, then go for a walk in the Monte Pellegrino forest. If after all that you dream of a break in the sun on the beach, head to the seaside district of Mondello.

Fancy a thrill? Then, treat yourself to the unusual visit to the Capuchin catacombs, not recommended for the faint-hearted!

 

Day 3 : Marsala

After spending two days in Palermo, it's now time to pick up your rental car in Italy and head for Marsala. But before reaching this charming Sicilian city, be sure to stop at the magnificent Temple of Segesta.

Once in Marsala, I recommend wandering through the narrow streets of the historic center. Among the main points of interest, there are:

  • The Duomo di San Tommaso
  • The Porta Garibaldi
  • The Baglio Anselmi Archaeological Museum


Don’t leave without having tasted a glass of Marsala, this locally produced wine with an international reputation!

Day 4 : Agrigento

Welcome to Agrigento, a must-see stop on your road trip in Sicily! This city full of history transports you through the centuries with its breathtaking archaeological remains. For a total immersion in antiquity, do not miss the Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Stroll among the majestic Greek temples, including the famous Temple of Concord, and let yourself be absorbed by the mystical atmosphere that reigns in this place. After a walk in this ancient sanctuary, enjoy a well-deserved break in the charming historical center of Agrigento.

Lose yourself in the alleys, discover lively squares, and taste the delights of Sicilian cuisine in one of the many restaurants in the old town.

 

Day 5 : Ragusa

As you explore the sunny corners of Sicily, a beautiful stop awaits you: the magnificent Ragusa. This city of character, with its picturesque streets and breathtaking panoramas, offers an authentic experience imbued with Sicilian charm.

Wander through the maze of its streets and let yourself be seduced by the baroque architecture of its many palaces and churches. Don't miss the Duomo, the Palazzo Cosentini, and the Ibleo gardens. Explore the surrounding vineyards, where you can taste delicious local wines.

 

Day 6 : Syracuse

Your 10-day tour of Sicily continues in Syracuse. Start your exploration with a visit to the Neapolis archaeological park, where you can discover the ancient ruins of the Greek theatre, the Roman amphitheatre, the sanctuary of Apollo and the famous Ear of Dionysius, an artificial cave carved into the limestone rock.

Then, stroll on the island of Ortygia, the ancient heart of Syracuse, and soak up its lively atmosphere as you wander through its picturesque alleys lined with baroque buildings and small craft shops.

Be sure to visit the magnificent cathedral of Ortygia and the Maniace Castle before tasting traditional dishes such as arancini, pasta alla Norma, seafood, and cannolis.

 

Days 7-8 : Taormina

Head to Taormina, a jewel perched on the hills of the eastern Sicilian coast. Start by visiting the famous Ancient Theatre, offering breathtaking views of the coastline. Explore the ancient ruins and imagine the performances that took place centuries ago.

Then, walk through the alleyways of the old town, where you’ll discover small shops, cafes with lovely terraces, and breathtaking views at every corner. Don’t miss the Corvaja Palace and the magnificent Piazza IX Aprile, with its famous baroque church and its panoramic balcony with Etna in the background. 

Go to Cap Taormina for a superb walk by the sea and at Isola Bella beach to discover the crystal-clear waters of this postcard scenery. Also, don't hesitate to take the funicular to easily access the beaches.

For a refreshing break, stop at the public garden of Taormina, a peaceful green oasis where you can relax in the shade of palm and lemon trees.

 

Day 9 : Cefalù

Continue your 10-day tour of Sicily with this charming town located on the north coast of the island and take time to visit this little Mediterranean gem. Start your day with a visit to the historic heart with the magnificent Cefalù Cathedral and its imposing towers. Admire the Byzantine mosaics and frescoes from the 12th century, testifying to its rich historical heritage.

Then, walk through the old town, especially the shopping street to find some souvenirs from this road trip in Italy to take back in your suitcases.
