Many people wonder if they need an international driver's license or a special license to drive a RV in Portugal .
We won't let the mystery last any longer: the answer is no.
In fact, you simply need to have a valid regular driving license in your home country to rent an RV in Portugal .
Here are the two requirements for your license to be accepted here:
1 - Your license must use the Latin alphabet.
2 - Primary and additional drivers must have been driving for more than 12 months.
Also, most of the time, rental companies will only accept to rent a RV to people who are 21 or older.
European driver's licenses
If your driving license is European it is fit for renting a RV in the United Kingdom, however, for more caution, obtaining an international driving license may be of interest. Please note that the international license does not replace your original driving license, it only accompanies it, you must have both documents with you at all times, including when you pick up your Portugal RV hire.
Other countries
If you come from any other country, the international license is mandatory. Foreign drivers must have an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is valid for 1 to 3 years. It is an official translation of your license in a dozen languages, and you can use it in over 150 countries!
It can be required or simply recommended, depending on each country.
It is also very important to find get informed on the traffic laws of the country you are visiting, for example, in the United Kingdom... we drive on the left!
Important note
The client must provide a credit card in the name of the primary driver to pick up their RV rental in the Portugal. This means that, when picking up your RV, you must present a driver's license and a credit card IN THE SAME NAME.
In general, rental agencies will pre-authorize an amount on your credit card corresponding to the deductible to be paid in the event of an accident.
