To rent an RV in Iceland, you must present a valid driver's license from your home country that was obtained at least 12 months ago, a photo ID, and your credit card.

A regular driver’s license is sufficient for motorhomes under 3.5 tons, otherwise, you will need a truck class driver’s license, be at least 25 years old, and have had a permit for 3 years.

If you do not have a European, European Economic Area (Liechtenstein and Norway), Canadian or American driver's license, you have to obtain an international driver's license. Watch out! The international license does not replace your original driver’s license, it only complements it. You must have both documents with you at all times.

In Iceland, the majority of rental vehicles are equipped with a manual transmission and those with an automatic transmission are generally more expensive.

In some countries, foreign drivers must have an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is valid for 1 to 3 years. It's an official translation of your driver's license in a dozen languages and you can use it in over 150 countries! 

It can be required or simply recommended depending on the country.

Before renting an RV, make sure that the primary driver and additional driver(s) are the required age to rent a vehicle.

The minimum age varies between 21 and 25 years old, from one renter to another.

Here are the minimum age requirements depending on the renter:

• McRent: 25 years old
• Touring Cars: 23 years old

Every year, many travelers find themselves unable to rent an RV, due to the lack of availability.

Undoubtedly, this form of travel is very popular and unfortunately, the demand is greater than the supply, especially during high season.

If you want to hire a vehicle during the months of July and August, book early (at least six months in advance), since it is our high season. Sometimes reservations open up to 1 year in advance and this can greatly affect the price of your trip.

Finally, it is also better to book your RV before buying your plane tickets, especially if you require a one-way and/or high season rental.

In Iceland, you can travel with a motorhome from June to September. You will bask in long days of sunshine, which will ease your travels and campsite installations. In September, you may have the opportunity to see the Northern Lights! 

July and August are the most recommended, however they are also the most requested. This means that availability is very limited. If you choose this season, plan to book your vehicle at least six months in advance to ensure availability.

Travelling outside of school holidays can be pleasant as there are far fewer travelers and rental prices are very competitive.

Here are the penalties that you should expect if you cancel your RV rental following a reservation:

• 61 days or more before departure: 20% of the price
• Between 60 and 46 days before departure : 25% of the price
• Between 45 and 15 days before departure: 50% of the price
• Less than 15 days before departure: 100% of the price

One-way rental fees, if applicable, are due in full when your reservation is made.

Car seat regulations vary from country to country. You must always check the road safety regulations, for your child's safety, for the country that you reside in and/or for the countries you are visiting.

In Iceland, a children's car seat is required for every child under 135cm tall. 

If your seat meets these standards, bring it with you! It's free to bring with most airlines and your child will be comfortable and feeling right at home.

Otherwise, you will have to consider renting a child seat with your vehicle. This option will be payable in advance or at the counter, depending on the rental companies.
