Type of license needed to rent an RV in Iceland

Many people wonder if they need an international driver's license or a special license to drive a RV in Iceland .

We won't let the mystery last any longer: the answer is no.

In fact, you simply need to have a valid regular driving license in your home country to rent an RV in Iceland

Here are the two requirements for your license to be accepted here:

1 - Your license must use the Latin alphabet.

2 - Primary and additional drivers must have been driving for more than 12 months.

Also, most of the time, rental companies will only accept to rent a RV to people who are 21 or older.

European driver's licenses

A regular driver’s license is sufficient for motorhomes under 3.5 tons, otherwise, you will need a truck class driver’s license, be at least 25 years old, and have had a permit for 3 years.

Other countries

If you do not have a European, European Economic Area (Liechtenstein and Norway), Canadian or American driver's license, you have to obtain an international driver's license. Watch out! The international license does not replace your original driver’s license, it only complements it. You must have both documents with you at all times.

In some countries, foreign drivers must have an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is valid for 1 to 3 years. It's an official translation of your driver's license in a dozen languages and you can use it in over 150 countries!

It can be required or simply recommended depending on the country.

Important note

The client must provide a credit card in the name of the primary driver to pick up their RV rental in the Iceland. This means that, when picking up your RV, you must present a driver's license and a credit card IN THE SAME NAME.

In general, rental agencies will pre-authorize an amount on your credit card corresponding to the deductible to be paid in the event of an accident.
