Iceland has one of the most changeable climates in the world, and there are two main seasons in which to discover the country:

• The summer season, which generally runs from mid-June to mid-September, is the most beautiful in terms of sunny days, but it's by no means a guarantee that the weather will be fine in July or August, unlike in most other European countries. Even in summer, the climate is mild and dry, so you can make the most of hiking trails and swimming in the fjords. The months of May, June and September/October are the best for a gentle discovery.  From June to August, however, the days can seem much longer, even interminable at the moment of the midnight sun (up to 20 hours of sunshine a day).

Travelling in the summer will enable you to discover Iceland quite easily, as the road network will be completely open, which is not the case in winter because of the snow.

• The winter months will show you a completely different side of the island, which will be covered in snow and ice, offering a multitude of activities such as snowmobiling, dog sledding and northern lights watching. Northern intensity guaranteed! Bear in mind, however, that the days here will be very short, leaving you with fewer options for visiting the territory.

The area is obviously busiest in summer, as the season is relatively short, but there's no shortage of wide-open spaces, so you'll always find a way to escape the heavy tourist flow.

There are 4 things you should know before crossing the border on your trip to Iceland:

1- Citizens of the European Union, Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland only need their identity papers to enter Iceland.

2- For countries exempt from Schengen entry visa requirements (see list), a passport valid for more than three months after the end of the stay is required for stays not exceeding 90 days.

3- In accordance with the Convention implementing the Schengen Agreement, passengers travelling to or from another Schengen state do not need a new visa, as this is a domestic flight.

4- Nationals of other states require a visa to enter Iceland, which can be applied for at the Icelandic consulate or embassy in the country concerned, for stays of up to 90 days.
